Students from Sea Girt, Spring Lake, Brielle, Spring Lake Heights, Belmar, and Mansquan came together for a sending district convocation at Sea Girt Elementary School. The students worked in teams to tackle STEM and design challenges under the guidance of Chris Anderson from Rutgers
University Center for Mathematics, Science & Computer Education (CMSCE). One 6th grader said, "I loved meeting new people and working with the students from the other schools. I really had fun designing and making the phone holder.” Throughout the day the students engaged in The Engineering Habits of Mind - creativity, optimism, communication, attention to ethics, systems thinking, and collaboration. For the final project of the day the students chose a target audience and designed a special phone holder to meet their audience’s needs. They then built prototypes of their holders and pitched them to the group. “It was a great experience to be a part of,” exclaimed a 5th grader.
